For those still unaware, Kory Ambler tragically passed away yesterday. He leaves behind his loved one, Jodi Newell, and their one-year-old son, Corado. Jodi is also pregnant, due January 4th. With so many connected to the family, our community is deeply hurting. Support and prayer will be much needed in the coming weeks and months.
Betty Jean Goodwin sends the following call to you for help:
Hello,
Being a community, it is more than appropriate (and needed) to show our love and support to the Newell family as they work their way through this tragic death of Kory Ambler.
Please, first of all, keep them lifted in prayer that God would give them his peace, comfort and strength to carry them through.
And second, let's take them meals for the next couple weeks. There's no need of a schedule, just take the food to them as they will have extra family and friends coming.
If you have questions, please call me at 781-630-1965.
On this evening before the season of Christmas begins, come and worship with us this evening. We'll sing, reflect, and experience together the story of true light entering into a dark world.
You were promised a "worship package" this morning. Take a few minutes to intentionally go through the following. Pray the prayers, sit back and watch (or just listen to) the music, and read the sermon. If you're with someone, do it together! If you're alone, read the prayer and sermon out loud; you may hear it differently than if you read it silently.
Know that I have prayed for you, and that others are doing this this morning along with you.
Peace to you.
Opening Prayer
Gracious God,
We pray that though we are interspersed throughout the land this morning rather than together in the same room, may You keep us together in Christ.
I pray that as we pray for peace, You may grant that all of us may be strengthened in our inner being with power through Your Spirit.
I pray that Christ may dwell in our hearts through faith, as we are being rooted and grounded in love.
I pray that we may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth of the love of God that leads to peace.
I pray that we may come to know what it means for us to proclaim "peace on earth," as we look around us these Advent and Christmas seasons.
I pray that we may come to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that we may be filled with all the fullness of God.
Now to God who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
Music(click on the link and turn up your speakers):
...and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants for ever.’
Now when the king was settled in his house, and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies around him, the king said to the prophet Nathan, ‘See now, I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of God stays in a tent.’ Nathan said to the king, ‘Go, do all that you have in mind; for the Lord is with you.’
But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan: Go and tell my servant David: Thus says the Lord: Are you the one to build me a house to live in? I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent and a tabernacle. Wherever I have moved about among all the people of Israel, did I ever speak a word with any of the tribal leaders of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built me a house of cedar?’ Now therefore thus you shall say to my servant David: Thus says the Lord of hosts: I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep to be prince over my people Israel; and I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may live in their own place, and be disturbed no more; and evildoers shall afflict them no more, as formerly, from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house. Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure for ever before me; your throne shall be established for ever.
Now to God who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages but is now disclosed, and through the prophetic writings is made known to all the Gentiles, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith— to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory for ever! Amen.
Someone forgot to tell the weather about all that we had planned for tomorrow, the Fourth Sunday of Advent! (The kids were going to sing and lead us in an Advent reading and we had gathering to fellowship AKA potluck scheduled in addition to our normal gathering to worship.)
As such, I've spoken with much of the church board, and each was concerned about the difficulty of travel tomorrow morning. While I will be at the church building at 11:00 for anyone who will show up for prayer and scripture reading, the church board is encouraging you not to travel.
However, we can be the church anyway! Look in your e-mail boxes early in the morning for a "worship package" with which you can worship right in front of your computer.
In the meantime, have fun shoveling, and use this nature-given sabbath well.
- Pastor Jeremy
Last Sunday we lit the second candle on our community Advent wreath, the candle of Love. We're reminded that the love of God is a love that gives all, sacrifices everything, and thinks of the loved before the lover.
This coming Sunday, the third of Advent, we'll light the candle of joy.

Potluck
Sunday, 12/21, after worship - Here's a note from Carol Newell:
Hello Everyone!
The Christmas Potluck is coming up in 11 days! It makes sense to get the sign up sheet out. I will post one on the bulletin board in the Newell Gathering Room for Sunday but if you won't be there or would like to let me know what you'd like to bring I will update the list (e-mail).
That day will be special for all of us. I understand the kids have something planned and I have something special planned for the kids. So come and enjoy the friendship of each other!

Christmas Eve Family Worship
Wednesday, 12/24, 6:00 PM - If you're in town, would you plan on worshiping together as a family-community for Christmas Eve? We'll worship for about an hour in traditional candle-lit fashion. On the eve of our celebration of the incarnation, what better way to know God's light than to be together as his people?
Finer Things Book Club
The book club is back in action on Sunday evening, 12/21. The group will be discussing Dune, and as it's the last book on our list, come prepared with a suggestion for our next list. Jason & Heidi Parker are hosting (click here for directions).
This is a full edition of the North Street Currents! Be sure to take time to read it all and note an exciting announcement at the end.
Last Sunday we lit the first candle on our community Advent wreath, the candle of Hope. We're reminded of the hope that God has given us, the hope for the world that's come down in Christ already, and the hope of Christ's coming again.
This coming Sunday, the second of Advent, we'll light the candle of Love. Love is a broad word these days. As we continue to ask ourselves, "Are we ready for the coming of the Lord?" in this Advent season, we'll think about our understanding of love as followers of Christ. Is it love to buy more and give more, or is the love of Christ within and through us something deeper, richer, and longer-lasting? In preparation for worship on Sunday, would you watch this video? (For those reading this in e-mail, click here to see the video.)
Year B Community Scripture Way (CSW)
On Christ the King Sunday, we were presented with our second annual Community Scripture Way. If this is new to you, it's basically a scripture reading plan for our whole community, directing us in worship and study. You can read more about it on our website here.
We are challenging everyone who is a part of our community to use the CSW. You'll find that it is less "aggressive" than last year's, and falls in line more directly with Sunday morning worship gathering readings and Wednesday evening corporate scripture study.
New this year is the option to have the daily readings sent to you by e-mail. Send a message tocsw@northst.org to receive the daily readings. If you prefer using a reader, you can use the RSS feed for the daily readings here. The daily readings by e-mail will begin this coming Monday (12/8).

The next bi-monthly Hot Topics panel discussion presented by the Hingham & Hull Religous Leaders Association is Sunday and we're hosting! If you're not going to watch ENC's presentation of Messiah, plan on coming to this discussion, which is one that will feature different faith responses to money and the current economic status of our country. Everyone is invited to bring a canned food item for the Hingham Interfaith Food Pantry. In addition, since we're hosting, we need various snacks for a time of "getting-to-know-you" afterwards. North Street Worship Planning Grid
In an effort to be better prepared in worship, Pastor Jeremy & Keri Lewis have developed a grid to help facilitate individuals and planning for our gatherings. Here is a link to the grid, and the link will always be available on the right side of the North St. News page.
...and last, but certainly not least...introducing...
The first annual North Street Community Retreat! As we seek to reflect community more, the church board was challenged in thinking about how we can create times of extended interaction with one another. It's very difficult to get to know each other beyond the surface an hour or two here and there. So as one initiative, we are planning an annual retreat. More details will come soon, but for now, block off the weekend of February 13-16 (President's Day Weekend). We will retreat to our district campground, Windsor Hills. We'll be staying in "the Inn," which is a wonderful facility with hotel quality rooms. Stay tuned for more information!
