1. This Sunday - The last two years on this date (fourth Sunday of Advent), snow has impeded our ability to be together the Sunday prior to Christmas.  While many forecasters are calling for snow on Sunday, hopefully it will hold off until after our gatherings this year!  We will consider the peace (shalom) of Advent in morning worship, and I'm looking forward to celebrating and caroling once again with our friends at Thaxter Park in the evening (see below for more details).  Also, please plan now on worshiping together on Christmas Eve @ 4:30 PM.  This is one of my favorite gatherings of the year, I hope you will come.  - Pastor Jeremy

2. Christmas Caroling - We will gather with the residents of Thaxter Park in their Community Center (30 Thaxter St.) on Sunday (12/19) at 5:30pm to enjoy some food and Christmas caroling.  There is limited parking, so if you're willing to make the short walk from the Church parking, that would be great!  They are providing a spaghetti and meatball dinner for us, and everyone from our church is asked to bring cookies, brownies and other finger-style desserts. If you are able to bake something we would greatly appreciate it!

3. Ladies Night/Cookie Swap - Hello Ladies!-- Just wanted to remind everyone that next Tuesday, 12/21, is our cookie swap! So far the cookies we have coming are spritz, sugar cut-outs, buckeyes and cran-pistachio cookies! Yummy! If you're planning on coming please let me know and what type of cookie you will be bringing! Hope you all can make it, it should be a GREAT time! I'm planning on bringing some fun hot chocolate with the trimmings to go with our cookies! Charlie has offered to bring a Christmas craft. Or you can bring any last minute crafts/gifts you need to get finished before the big day! Let me know if you have any questions!-- Becky Rankin

4. Christmas Shoppe - The Christmas Shoppe of Friends of the Homeless of the Shore continues to be very busy and open for "business" in our own Newell Gathering Room.  There is still need for volunteers to sort and wrap from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and Saturdays through Dec. 24. Hours can be arranged for volunteers who can only help in the evenings. Donors are still needed to adopt families needing Christmas gifts as well.  What a great way to "give" in this season!

5. January Potluck - We will have a Bread & Soup style potluck on Sunday January, 16th.  There will be a sign-up sheet on the foyer bulletin board soon.

6. North Street Community Retreat- Our third annual North Street Community Retreat (February 18-21, President's Day weekend) is getting closer and closer.  Everyone is invited to come!  The 'programming' will be minimal to maximize our time of fellowship with each other...just getting to know one another better.  We will have a special time of worship together on Sunday morning (no worship gathering in Hingham that day).  Windsor Hills Campground is just outside of Hillsboro, NH.  We'll be staying in "the Inn".  Cost includes 8 meals and 3 nights in hotel-quality rooms with individual bathrooms.  A deposit of $30/per person would be helpful as soon as possible.  All payments can be submitted in the offering boxes (but mark it clearly!).  Total amount due is the Sunday prior to our leaving.  The shared costs figure out as follows:
  • $135/person, assuming double occupancy
  • $67.50/child (4-12)
  • $10/child (0-4)
  • $350/family (2 adults, 2 children)
  • $180/person, single occupancy

1. This Sunday - We'll light our third Advent candle this Sunday - "Joy" and look at what joy is in relationship to life.  The gospel text will serve as our main focus where John the Baptist (from prison) essentially asks Jesus, "Are you really the one?  Then why am I in prison!?"  While many people long for Advent & Christmas, for many others, joy is a difficult thing to come by in this season.  But the joy of Christ's coming is for all.  Perhaps it's because of our situations of life that we can find joy.  We'll look at this together.

There are a number of exciting aspects to this Sunday!  It is indeed Christ the King Sunday (Reign of Christ).  This wraps up the church year for us with a bange will be receiving new members during worship gathering.  The prayer chorus for this week will be "King of Glory."

After we worship, we will have a potluck.  We are looking for people to bring various Thanksgiving-themed items.  If you have already signed up, thank you!  If you have not and would like to, please email Christina Duncan. We pretty much all set with desserts, gravy, and stuffing.  We are still in need of vegetables, rolls, and maybe a small ham or anything else you can think of.  This will also serve as a send-off party for Ryan Ardrey, who is headed to Kansas City for seminary on December 10th.  Recognizing the variety of expenses related to his leaving, we're inviting those who would to participate in love offering for him (be sure to mark your offering or a portion of it for Ryan).

Then after we eat at 2:30pm we will decorate our chapel for Advent & Christmas.  Can you believe it!?  We need all the help we can get to be ready for the first Sunday of Advent next week.

You may notice the sanctuary looking a bit different in the coming weeks, and not just because we're decorating for Advent & Christmas!  We are giving our unused organ to the Epworth Chapel on the Square.  This is a new worship gathering meeting at the Second Church in Dorchester under the leadership of our former pastor, Cliff Hersey.

1. Sunday Service
2. Lobster Fest
3. The Remembrance
4. Ladies Night
5. Toddler Room Coverage

1. This Sunday
This Sunday we'll look at Acts 18-19. These chapters might be familiar to some, but I imagine that much of it is fairly unfamiliar to most. So it would be great to read it sometime before coming to worship. Going through Acts has certainly demonstrated to us that the Church is a group of human beings divinely inspired by God. The events and happenings in Acts 18-19 will demonstrate this to us again: we need God's Spirit if anything will be "something"!

2. Lobster Fest
Our annual Lobster Fest is this Sunday, October 3rd, after we worship together in the morning. As usual, we'll purchase lobster together and cover our college students from paying. Other 'cook out' food will be available as well. If you would like a lobster (or two), please comment on the Facebook event page or email Jason Parker. We'll be counting heads for those who want lobster during announcements this Sunday to be able to get the right amount... so be early. We are also looking for people to bring drinks, salads, and desserts. You can also comment on
the facebook page or email Jason if you would like to bring something.

We'll be gathering at the Newell Compoud at
8 Driftway in Weymouth.

Don't forget to bring some cash to help pay for the lobster... (except for you, college students.)

3. The Remembrance
The Eastern Nazarene College A Cappella Choir and Chamber Singers, as well as the Alumni Choir, will be giving a concert Sunday Evening October 3rd at the Quincy Salvation Army Church. In lieu of our regular Remembrance gathering, all are invited to join in worship at the Salvation Army Church at 6pm that evening. The address is 6 Baxter St. in Quincy.

4. Ladies Night
Ladies night will take place this Tuesday (1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month). We usually begin at 6pm but come when you can. Most of us work on various craft projects but if you are not crafty you can join us for fellowship.

5. Toddler Room Coverage
Thank you to Carol Newell for putting together a schedule that covers from now through December. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to help play with these very lovely children.

The North St. News is posted and sent out weekly. To ensure something is included, please send submissions to Christina before noon on Wednesdays. Thanks!

  5. Upcoming Meetings
1. Sunday's Worship Gathering - Join us this Sunday as we look together at Acts 17. I believe that this passage (particularly the second half) is a wonderful example of how the gospel can enter into a culture and highlight the presence of faith already there...yet claim it for who and what we know to be Truth. This has a lot to offer us as we seek to discern God's mission for us right where we live, work, & play. I'm excited for our time of worship together! - Pastor Jeremy

2. Ministry Opportunity- Toddler Room Coverage
North Street Community Church is blessed to have a growing toddler population!
In order to make sure they are properly cared for each Sunday during sermon time more help is needed. If you are willing to share some of your love with these beautiful children one Sunday a month with one other person please let Carol Newell know and we will work out a schedule that works out for you. Everyone who works with the children will go through a CORI check. Thank you for serving in this way!

3. Animal Care Team
We are looking forward to hosting the Eastern Nazarene College Animal Care Team on October 23-24. We'll have a presentation on Saturday the 23rd at 6pm and then on Sunday morning Professor Jonathan Twining will be speaking to us about the care of God's creation. Here's a short video about the team. Stay tuned for more information!

4. Lobster Fest 2010
Lobster Fest will be held October 3rd at Herb and Carol Newell's house (4
Driftway in Weymouth). We are asking for each individual to contribute $10 (or your best effort) towards lobsters, chicken, hamburgers, hotdogs, corn and beverages. There will be a sign-up sheet for deserts, salads and sides.

September 17, 2010

Whoa!  A North St. News?  It's been a while again, but it won't be a while again from this point on.

Allow us to explain...

This past Monday night, we had a wonderful church board meeting.  It was easily the longest board meeting since Pastor Jeremy has been here.  Let us highlight three things:

Communication Assistant - The Church Board hired Christina Duncan to a small administrative position: Communication Assistant.  She will be overseeing the formation and maintenance of a church directory, helping to sending out this North St. News weekly (hence, the first sentence of this update), and continuing to develop our "Quick Updates" distribution list.  The hope is that we will all know better the events and life happenings in our church community.  You can contact Christina at her new address.

Minister of Worship - The Church Board voted to bring on Sarah Troxler as our Minister of Worship.  This will mean a number of things going into the future, but for now, we want everyone who can to come to an installation gathering for her at The Remembrance this week (6:00 PM).  We will have a light reception afterward (email Meghan Scott if you can help by bringing something).  You can contact Sarah by email at her new address.

North Street Community Discernment of God's Mission - We are excited to announce that our church community is embarking on a journey of discernment.  The hope is to discern God's mission for the North Street Community.  Everyone who would is asked and encouraged to be a part of this process.  Much more will come out very soon about this journey, but for now you can read about it by clicking here.

We are excited about how we are responding to God's leadership these days.  The series on Acts has challenged many of us, just as we hoped and asked for when we began.  We've got a few more weeks with it, would you continue to pray and read Acts through and through and through?  May the heart of Christ and his mission for our church community arise within and through us.

Update: July 27, 2008

Wow...it's been a long time since an email update.  Crazy summers...

Lots of things are going on:
  1. Summer Faith & Film Discussions...?
  2. Missionary Restricks with us this Sunday
  3. ...including a picnic lunch at Hingham Bathing Beach
  4. The Remembrance Sunday Evening
  5. Kids Summer Fun Week
  6. Animal Care Team
  7. Board and Committees News
  8. Help Moving (two people!)
1.  So some of you may remember that we were going to have "Faith & Film Discussions" this summer.  Well after the first couple of dates that had been scheduled fell apart due to conflicts, it hasn't materialized. The board decided the book wasn't very appealing, so we're going to do our own thing beginning soon (without a book).  What we need from you are suggestions about films that have impacted your life or have otherwise made you think hard about faith in Christ and how it is lived out.  We will then form a schedule.  Send your suggestions to Pastor Jeremy for now.  (In the meantime, if the book did interest you at all, perhaps you'd like to follow my reviews of the chapters and films on my blog as Meghan and I are reading the book and viewing the films together.)

2.  This coming Sunday, August 1, Dave & Rhoda Restrick will be with us in worship.  They are missionaries to Mozambique and have been serving in Africa since 1985.  You can read more about them here.  Of course, they are parents to our own David Restrick (Jr.).  David, Jr. will also be reporting to us concerning what he did while in Mozambique over the last several months.  We're looking forward to  their reports!

3.  And after worshiping together, everyone's invited down the road to the Hingham Bathing Beach for our annual picnic in the park.  Bring blankets, chairs, frisbees, balls, and of course: picnicky food to share.

4.  We will have The Remembrance on Sunday evening (come at 6:00 PM) in our "regular" format in the sanctuary.

5.  Our Kids Summer Fun Week is quickly approaching.  If somehow you haven't heard what's going on, be sure and click on the link to check out what's happening.  We're excited about having a team from Eastern Nazarene College to help lead this week for the kids.  If you have family, friends, neighbors who might be coming, be sure to get them to register as soon as possible.  We also still need volunteers of time, snacks, and prayer.  If you are going to volunteer time, let us know as soon as possible as well so we can get a CORI in process.

6.  We are looking forward to hosting the Eastern Nazarene College Animal Care Team in the fall.  The date is yet to be set, but they will be here for a Saturday evening presentation and with us on Sunday morning as well, as Professor Jonathan Twining will speak to us about the care of creation.  Here's a short video about the team.  Stay tuned for the date!

7.  Your Church Board is overseeing all sorts of activity and needs these days.  The board has chosen to meet bi-monthly so that committees can meet regularly in between and accomplish the details of the work and ministry of the church.  Upcoming meetings are: Ministries Committee: 8/2, Building Use & Wedding Policy: 8/23, Finance & Administration: 8/30, with the full board meeting on 9/13.  All of the meetings are open and we need more input, so please feel free to come.

8.  Lastly, there are two opportunities to help individuals who are moving.  Angelica Wilson is moving this coming Monday, 8/2.  We need movers and vehicles to make it happen.  While we've been saying 5:30, if any can come a bit earlier to get a head start, that would be great.  With a good amount of people, we can make it a quick move so those who need to make the Ministries Committee meeting that evening will be able to.  The other opportunity is an acquaintance of Rosalie Carlson who has no other help in moving.  Her name is Elizabeth Porier and she's moving this Saturday.  If you can help her, please call her (508-828-4571) by tomorrow evening (Wednesday) so that she knows who and how much help to expect.

As always, use our online calendar to keep up with dates & times, including our next softball game on 8/3.

Grace & Peace of Christ to and through you all...

North Street Update - May 19, 2010

It's been quite a while since we've had one of these North St. News updates.  We've got a lot coming up!

District Assembly & Conventions
Our week of conventions and assembly for the New England District Church of the Nazarene begins with tonight's NMI Opening Service (7:00 PM).  For the rest of the schedule for the week, click here.  All events are at the Wollaston Church of the Nazarene, 37 East Elm Avenue, Quincy (on the campus of ENC).  Please keep the assembly particularly in prayer as we elect a new district superintendent.

Adult Sunday School
Teacher Ed DiSante just brought us through a great series and is beginning a new one on Acts to complement our worship gatherings.  Click here to read the intro for this coming Sunday (9:30 AM).

Pentecost Sunday and the Season Following
We will finally begin the much-promised series on the book of Acts this coming Sunday.  It is indeed Pentecost Sunday and everyone is invited to wear the color of the church: red.  We will receive new members as well. Should be a good time!

The Remembrance this Summer
The Remembrance gathering will see a different schedule this summer.  In general, we'll gather three times a month: 1st Sunday - "normal" at the church building; 3rd Sunday - "open air" at Nantasket Beach or Wompatuck State Park; 4th Sunday - "with others" celebrating communion with other Christians.  We'll begin this coming Sunday by meeting at the Boston Common for the "Common Cathedral" communion service.  It begins at 1:00, so you'll want to grab a quick lunch and get into Boston after our own worship gathering.  They gather by the Brewer Fountain.  (Perhaps you want to plan ahead and bring a bag lunch to picnic with on the common.)  Stay tuned for more specific details on future Sundays.

Ladies' Night
Ladies Night will make a spectacular return this coming Tuesday (5/25).  All ladies are invited to the Newell Gathering Room for a night of fellowship, creative handi-works, and coffee, etc.  Begins at 6:00, but feel free to come when you can!

A Summer of Films & Discussion on Faith
Read the website for details, but everyone is invited to join in on watching films and discussing them in light of our faith.  This summer, we'll be reading through a book by Bryan Stone called Faith and Film: Theological Themes at the Cinema.

Kids Week 2010
...and don't forget to block off the week of August 9th-14th for Kids' Week!  We have a great team from Eastern Nazarene College who will be helping us out, but we'll need your help, too.  E-mail Ryan Ardrey with questions or to help out.

Know What's Happening & Calendar
Remember, check out our "Quick Updates" page if you're wondering what's happening in our community.  Birthdays, prayer requests, and other little updates are posted here almost daily.  As always, utilize our online calendar for information on coming events.  Our whole softball schedule is up there, so be sure to check it out to come and play or just cheer along our team.

No Remembrance This Evening

Sorry for the late notice, but there will be no Remembrance gathering this evening.  See you soon!

This Weekend, April 17-18, 2010

Perhaps you've heard by now that this weekend has seen some changes in our planned schedule.  Details on Sunday below.

But first, Keri & E.J. Lewis are moving from Quincy to Hingham this weekend.  We can help them tomorrow at 2:00.  E-mail Pastor Jeremy for the address.

The church board voted to postpone Annual Meeting for one week (so now it's next Sunday, April 25th).  We did this in order that some can support the Kratzsch family at the funeral of their matriarch, Genevieve (including Pastor Jeremy who will be presiding).  The visiting hours begin at 11:00 AM with a memorial service at 12:00 noon, both at the Cartmell Funeral Home in Plymouth.  There will still be a gathering of worship in Hingham at 10:30 AM with Rev. Tim Eyring preaching.  But the potluck that had been scheduled is also postponed.  We will have it to honor our graduates on Sunday, May 2nd.

See you sometime this weekend!

Friday, April 2, 2010

Just a quick reminder about this weekend.  We are well into the Easter Triduum.

Today is Good Friday.  We'll observe Christ's death together this evening in our annual Service of Shadows at 7:00.

Tomorrow is Holy Saturday.  Perhaps you'll recognize the day in some kind of holy rest.  On this Sabbath day, Christ rested in the tomb, the disciples were scattered, confused, and fearful.  Though we know that "Sunday's a-comin'," they did not and it's good to recognize their emptiness and loneliness - if for one day only.  Perhaps this article by ENC Professor, Eric Severson, would help you understand the day.

And of course, Sunday is Resurrection Sunday.  We'll gather early at 6:00 AM to reverse Friday with a Service of Light.  After we'll eat breakfast together.  And of course, we'll celebrate the resurrection and beginning of Easter at 10:30 AM.

-------------------------------------

For other news including prayer for the Kratzsch family, help for the Rankin family in moving, and other "quick updates," check out our Quick Updates.

Bless you...and may the path of Christ to the cross and out of the tomb lead us in these days and forever!

Friday, March 19th, 2010

It's been a while since we've had an update, but lots of things are happening!

Here's what's in this update:

  1. Festival of Life Clean-Up
  2. Baptism (Potluck)
  3. 24 Hours That Changed the World
  4. Holy Week Gatherings
  5. Annual Meeting (w/ potluck)
  6. Community Garden
  7. Summer Kids' Week
  8. Quick Updates
1.  Tomorrow, Saturday March 20th, we will be blessed with several teens who are in town for the annual Festival of Life coming to work around our church building, doing various spring clean-up projects, particularly around the shelter area.  We'd love for you to join us as we clean up.  The winds and rain of the past couple of weeks have done a number, so it's much needed!  We'll be working between 1:00 and 5:00.

2.  This Sunday (March 21st), we will be baptizing Brysen Parker Scott into the faith community.  As part of this celebration, we will indeed have our "monthly" potluck after the worship gathering.  There's no theme, really, just bring food enough to share!

3.  We're well more than half-way through Lent and our 24 Hours That Changed the World emphasis.  This Sunday we'll look at "The Torture and Humiliation of the King."  Don't forget our Wednesday "Going Deeper" study as well at 7:00.  We've been having some good discussion at these each week.

4.  Plan now to gather, reflect, and worship during Holy Week!  On Good Friday (April 1st), we'll gather for our annual Good Friday "Service of Shadows at 7:00 PM.  Then on Resurrection Sunday, we'll come together at 6:00 AM for a sunrise gathering with breakfast following.  Of course, we'll have our regularly scheduled worship gathering at 10:30 AM.  There will be no Remembrance that evening.

5.  Our Annual Meeting Sunday is planned for the third Sunday of April (the 18th).  We will also have potluck on that day.

6.  Several have been talking about organizing a Community Vegetable Garden on the church grounds.  If you are interested in this, please e-mail Pastor Jeremy.  We're looking for someone to spearhead the effort and we need to get cracking if it's going to happen this year!

7.  Plans are beginning to come together for our Summer Kids' Week with a team from Eastern Nazarene College. Plan now to help out: the dates are August 8-14.

8.  Finally, just a reminder that we now have "Quick Updates" throughout the week which you can read or see in several places: follow our Twitter page, our Facebook page (you don't have to join Facebook to view it), or an RSS feed to follow in a "reader."  These updates include prayer requests, exciting news about members of our community, articles of interest, and more.   As always, you can see our online calendar for events as well.

Hope to see you soon!

1st Sunday in Lent: The Last Supper

Join us this weekend as we look at the first event in our series on 24 Hours That Changed the World: The Last Supper.  It's amazing the number of times that Jesus is present at a meal, around a table, or in some kind of setting with food in the gospels.  But no meal is more pivotal or meaningful for we who follow him than the Last Supper, which gives us the foundation for the Table of Communion.  This Sunday, we'll look at this incredible event just the night before Jesus was killed on the cross, what it meant for Jesus, the disciples, and for us today.  Hope to see you there!  (10:30 AM)

Ash Wednesday & Lent 2010

Hello, North Street Community!

Today we begin the season of Lent with an Ash Wednesday Service of Commitment at 7:00 PM (there will be no Community Dinner tonight, though there may be something little to munch on after the service).

Read on below for more about what's going on during Lent, and we'll see you soon!

Passion of Christ,
Pastor Jeremy

Lent 2010

Once again, Lent has come upon us.  Each year, we've taken part in various aspects of this season.  This year is no different.

First off, if you're not too sure what this Lent thing is all about, read this article about the Season of Lent.

Next, you want to ask yourself (and your family or roommates) how you want to participate in Lent.  Here are some endeavors that are available through our church community and other traditional practices:
  • Special Gatherings - Join together with the community for these special times of reflection, worship, or commitment:
    • Ash Wednesday Service of Commitment - February 17, 7:00 PM
    • Good Friday Service of Shadows - April 2, 7:00 PM
    • Easter Sunrise Service of Light - April 4, 6:00 AM
  • 24 Hours That Changed the World - We are traveling through this emphasis that looks in depth at the events of Jesus Christ's passion week.  Click here for the various ways to dive into these events this year (Sunday sermons, Wednesday group study, a daily reading devotional book, and a full-length book)
  • Prayer Times - In addition to your own times of prayer, members of our community are invited to join together on Thursdays at 12:20 in the Angell Chapel on the campus of Eastern Nazarene College.  We do this as many of our members are on campus during the day as staff or students.  These prayer times will last about 20 minutes and are guided as well as individual.
  • Fasting & Sacrifice - Lent is often a time when followers of Christ remove something from their lives as an act of sacrifice, identity, or submission.  The possibilities are endless (like fasting from meat, technology, etc.), but see this article for a great introduction to fasting.

24 Hours That Changed The World

During the season of Lent, we are embarking together in a study called 24 Hours That Changed the World.

There are four ways that you can participate at various levels in this throughout Lent:

1.  If you want to dive into the passion story this Lent, come to the worship gathering every Sunday as well as Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.  Each week we will look at a different event in the passion week:
  • Wed, February 17 - Ash Wednesday - Commitment Service
  • Sun, February 21 - The Last Supper
  • Sun, February 28 - The Garden of Gethsemane
  • Sun, March 7 - Condemned by the Righteous
  • Sun, March 14 - Jesus, Barabbas, and Pilate
  • Sun, March 21 - The Torture and Humiliation of the King
  • Sun, March 28 - Palm Sunday - The "Triumphal" Entry
  • Fri, April 2 - Good Friday - Service of Shadows
  • Sun, April 4 - Resurrection Sunday
    • Sunrise Gathering
    • 10:30 Gathering - Christ the Victor
2.  If you want to dive even deeper...come to our Wednesday Evening discussion each week at 7:00 PM (beginning 2/24) to look deeper into each event through a video presentation and discussion.

3.  And if you want to dive even more deeply...read the 24 Hours That Changed the World - Forty Days of Reflection daily devotional book throughout the forty days of Lent.  If you want a copy of this, be sure and let Pastor Jeremy know by 9:00 AM Friday morning (2/12) as he'll be putting in the order then.  A church member is paying for half the cost and shipping, so it'll be $5 if you'd like the book.  They will be in time for the Ash Wednesday service.

4.  And if you want to dive even deeper still, read the actual book: 24 Hours That Changed the World.  We won't be ordering this book for everyone, but you can order it at any major online bookstore.

Stay tuned for more information about the Lenten season...
