STORIES OF GOD, a family-friendly production written by Rainer Wilke, hits the ENC stage NEXT WEEK, and we wanted to let you know that there are still seats available for both the Educational School Matinees (9:30am, February 16 & 17) and the Evening Performances (7:30pm, February 16, 17 & 18). For questions, ticket purchases and school reservations, please call the Box Office at 617-745-3715. Credit cards are accepted.
The Eastern Nazarene Gospel Choir will be recording a live worship album on Saturday, February 25th at 6:45pm in the Mann Student Center Auditorium, on the ENC Main Campus. All are invited to attend and admission is free!

North Street Community Retreat - Our fourth annual North Street Community Retreat at Windsor Hills Campground (February 17-20, President’s Day Weekend) is yet even closer! Click here for all the info. Everyone is invited to come. We will have a special time of worship together on Sunday morning and invite all to come for worship and stay for lunch, even if you're unable to stay overnight at all (there will no worship gathering in Hingham that day). If you are thinking of not going simply based on finances, please speak with Pastor Jeremy! We want to try and work it out.

Coffeehouse with St. Paul's Church of the Nazarene - Coffeehouse (Open Mic Night) is coming to North Street this Friday, January 20 at 7pm! We join the St. Paul's Church of the Nazarene (Duxbury) hosting an open mic night in our own chapel. Come at 7pm for an hour or so of music, poetry reading, and more, and then stay afterward for a time of fellowship and refreshment in the Newell Gathering Room. Please bring a snack or drink to share. All are invited to perform: the young, the old, the inexperienced and the savant! Let Sarah know if you'd like to perform.

Sunday - We continue Sunday in the Words to Build a Life On series, focusing this week on Matthew 7:7-12. And after the worship gathering, we'll gather to fellowship around the table for our monthly potluck. There is no theme this month, so just bring something delicious to share!

Update on 7-year-old Jackson Oberndorfer: Jackson has been discharged from Boston Children's Hospital (less than a week after brain surgery!). He is doing well in recovery, but the family has to stay in Boston for several more days as Jackson can't travel yet. Keep them in prayer. - Pastor Jeremy
Ryan Ardrey - who left us last December to go to Kansas City to attend Nazarene Theological Seminary - is now Student Body President there. Way to lead, Ryan! (Ryan would surely love notes of hello, encouragement, etc.!)

1. Sunday - We continue Sunday in the Words to Build a Life On series, focusing on what is often seen as one of Jesus' oddest sayings: Matthew 7:6 - "Do not give what is holy to dogs; and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under foot and turn and maul you." What could he be saying? Come and wrestle together with this verse, both in Sunday School at 9:30 and worship 10:30.

Also, after the worship gathering, we will continue our conversation about our Global Partnership. We are in prayer this week about four opportunities that have been presented to us. Even if you can't come to the meeting right after worship (lunch as well), please pray for us as we seek the Lord's will.

2. North Street Community Retreat - Our fourth annual North Street Community Retreat at Windsor Hills Campground (February 17-20, President’s Day Weekend) is getting closer. Everyone is invited to come! The ‘programming’ will be minimal to maximize our time of fellowship with each other as an opportunity to get to know one another better. We will have a special time of worship together on Sunday morning (no worship gathering in Hingham that day). Windsor Hills Campground is just outside of Hillsboro, NH. We’ll be staying in “the Inn”. Cost includes 8 meals and 3 nights in simple hotel-quality rooms with an individual bathroom. A deposit of $30 per person would be helpful as soon as possible. All payments can be submitted in the offering boxes in the sanctuary (but mark it clearly!). The total amount due is due the Sunday prior to our leaving (2/12). The shared costs figure out as follows:

$140/person, assuming double occupancy
$190/person, single occupancy
$70/child (4-12)
$90 for one night if anyone can only go for one night. (Further nights can be added later for the full amount, but not the other way around. i.e. If one pays the full amount, it cannot be reduced during the actual weekend of the retreat.)

The church board has agreed that we want everyone who wants to go to be able to. So we’re asking people to pay as much as they can of the above rates and even more if possible to help out with those who can’t pay the whole amount. If you are thinking of not going simply based on finances… please speak with Pastor Jeremy! We want to try and work it out.

Our friend Muriel Ross is in recovery in the hospital, keep her in prayer.
Joe Ann Wachtel had an accident last week and is still recovering physically. Pray for her.
Pastor Jeremy offers this prayer request: I'm praying for and ministering to a Nazarene pastor family from Kansas City who is in Boston for a couple of weeks for various procedures and surgery for their 7-year-old son, Jackson who has a very rare disease (Moyamoya) that can be operated on here in Boston. His parents are Justin & Sarah Oberndorfer. Please pray for them as you can. Jackson's surgery is today and as of this writing, he has come through great so far! They will have to stay in Boston for several days after the surgery. - Pastor Jeremy

1. Sunday- This Sunday we will do something a bit different for a Sunday morning for us. Being that New Year's Day falls on a Sunday this year, we will participate together in a "Wesley Covenant Service." This is a service of confession, commitment, and renewal originally formulated by John Wesley. It calls us to consider our lives as the people of God: sinners saved by grace. We did this last year on a Sunday evening and many people really appreciated the opportunity to go through it together at the beginning of a new year. We hope that it will be a great opportunity for us all. To be able to worship in spirit and in truth, it might be helpful to read the words prior to coming. If you would like to do so, click here to read the service. See you Sunday!

2. North St. News- As you may have noticed North St. News is being sent out weekly by noon time on Thursdays. With this new publication day and time if you would like something added to North St. News please submit it to Christina no later than 6pm Wednesday. You may have also realized that a new section has been added to North St. news entitled "Upcoming Community Related Events". This is a great place to announce events that you are involved with or things that are happening in your life. Watch this section for future events that members of our community are a part of.

1. This Weekend- Christmas is upon us! If you're in town this weekend, plan on being with us for our two Christmas gatherings: Christmas Eve Gathering of Light at 4:16 PM on Saturday (12/24) and our Christmas Sunday morning worship (12/25) at 10:30 (there will also be children's Sunday School at 9:30). If you're out of town: sorry that we'll miss you, but Merry Christmas!

Families in Need- If any North Street members are aware of families in your neighborhood, workplace, etc. that could use some extra help/presents this year for Christmas, please let Dorothy know as there is opportunity to help through the Friends of the Homeless Christmas Shoppe. This is a great way to be able to bless families (even anonymously!).

1. The Remembrance- The Remembrance is back for a one-time gathering on Saturday, December 17th at 4pm. Join us for this candle-lit worship experience, taking some time out of the busyness of the season to observe advent.

2. Christmas Caroling- After the Remembrance, you are invited to come Christmas caroling through the neighborhood (about 5pm). This is a wonderful opportunity for us to be a presence to our Hingham neighbors! Bring a dessert or drink to share in the gathering room after caroling.

3. Cookie Exchange- This coming Tuesday (12/20 at 7pm) in lieu of Ladies' Craft Night, the ladies will be having a cookie exchange! We will also put our collective forces together to help out in the Friends of The Homeless Christmas Shoppe wrapping gifts. Please let Becky Rankin know if you can make it and what cookies you will be bringing. Please make about 3 dozen to swap and nibble on while we wrap. So, come out for some delicious cookies, warm refreshments, and excellent company!
If you would be willing, please also write out the recipe for the cookies you make and we'll make a cookie cook book for us all!

4. Christmas Shoppe- You may have noticed that the Newell Gathering room has been transformed into what looks like Santa's workshop. There is still a need for NEW items especially for infants, teens and adults (No candles please) as well as wrapping paper and gift tags. If you need a list of suggestions please email Christina or talk to Dorothy.
In addition, Dorothy is wondering if any North Street families would like to deliver Christmas bundles to a few homeless families at the Weymouth Super 8 motel on Rt 53 (opposite BJS) and/or the Extended Stay Americana in Braintree? And since you would have the family information to continue to befriend the families you deliver to? Please speak to Dorothy or contact her at the church.

1. Christmas Caroling- We will gather with the residents of Thaxter Park in their Community Center (30 Thaxter St.) on Sunday (12/4) at 5:30pm to enjoy some food and Christmas caroling. There is limited parking, so if you're willing to make the short walk from the Church parking lot, that would be great! Everyone from our church is asked to bring cookies, brownies and other finger-style desserts. If you are able to bake something we would greatly appreciate it!

2. "The Journey" The Wednesday after Thanksgiving, we will begin a series on Wednesday evenings called "The Journey" which walks with Joseph & Mary on their trip to Bethlehem. For those interested, there is a book as well as a daily devotion-reflection booklet. There's even an app for Android or iOS that might be fun for the kids as we move through Advent to Christmas. Join us!

3. Global Partnerships- As part of the discernment process the North St. Community Church has been working with Lora Wooster in a possible partnership within MesoAmerica. We had a nice meeting with Lora on Monday night. There are many things we should begin to think about as we begin this process. Included is a link to a document Lora provided on Steps to Congregational Partnership Development for North American Churches. Other questions to consider are: What would we do and why we would do this? How would we accomplish it? (Money? Time? Activities?) What do we have to offer/talents? What are our short term goals? What are our midrange goals and timing? What is our overall outcome/goal? If you want more information please feel free to talk to Ed DiSante.

ENC Symphonic Wind/Jazz Christmas Concert with several of our own North St. musicians, Friday, Dec. 2 at 7:30pm. The concert is in the Cove Auditorium at Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy and admission is free.

Salvation Army Bell Ringing Saturday December 3rd from 10am to noon at South Shore Plaza in Braintree at the CVS at the Legal Seafood Entrance. All are invited to come!

Handel's Messiah, performed by ENC Choral Union - Saturday, Dec. 3 at 7pm and Sunday, Dec. 4 at 3pm. Both performances are at Wollaston Church of the Nazarene in Quincy. Admission is free.

1. This Sunday - We will wrap up chapter 6 of Matthew and that portion of the Sermon on the Mount this week. Prepare for worship by reading the Community Scripture Way. This is the last Sunday of the seasonal church year, also known as Christ the King Sunday. This is appropriate for us as we will be focused on the Lordship of Christ in wrapping up this section of the Sermon on the Mount (for now! ...as we'll take a break from it during Advent & Christmas).

After we worship, join us as we celebrate Thanksgiving a little early as a community by having a Thanksgiving-themed potluck. And then after that, plan on staying as we "hang the greens" by decorating the chapel for the Advent & Christmas seasons!

Frog Pond Skating Show - Jennifer Colson has invited us to come see her perform with others from the Skating Club of Boston as well as Olympic and future Olympic skaters on December 1st at 5pm at the Frog Pond located in Boston Common at Park St.

Caroling - On Sunday, December 4th at 5:30 pm at 30 Thaxter St. in the community/meeting room. The residents of Thaxter Park will be providing a soup supper and we are bringing dessers. Hope everyone can join us!

This Sunday - Jesus' words about worry are some of the best known in the Sermon on the Mount (prepare for our worship gathering by reading this passage and others): "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear." The question for us this week is: How you doin' with that? Come and hear what Jesus says about worry this week.

2. Ladies' Craft Night- You don't have to be crafty to come! Just come to fellowship! Maybe you have some things to organize or want to learn how to do something or just need time to sit and relax. We meet the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 7pm.

3. Advent Decorating We will be decorating the chapel for the Advent season on the afternoon of 11/20, following the potluck. If you plan to be there, tell Sarah, especially if you can help with lifting things and assembling the Christmas tree.

1. This Sunday - This past Monday evening many of us had a great time lighting up the neighborhood on All Hallow's Eve. You can see some pictures on our Facebook page. It was a great time! Halloween is the night prior to All Saints Day (Nov. 1st). We will again recognize our dead in Christ this first Sunday of November. If you would like to add an individual to be remembered, please email Pastor Jeremy so we can add a candle in their memory for this Sunday.

In addition, we will of course continue in our Words to Build a Life on series, looking at Matthew 6:22-24. So join us as we think upon and set the stage for acting upon Jesus' words concerning our lives being overloaded.

2. Kids in Worship: TONIGHT! Friday, November 4 at 7pm, we will be meeting at the chapel to discuss our concerns and ideas about the involvement of and care for our children in our worship gatherings. All are invited! Please let Sarah know if you plan on being there or want to be a part of the conversation.

2. All Hallow's Eve-Light Up the Night!

As we seek to be a bright place of community on what's otherwise a multi-faceted dark night, we are hoping to light up the neighborhood on Halloween. We will be filling our property with light, and passing out candy and hot cider to our neighbors as they walk by. Please join us to help spread the light of Jesus…costumes are encouraged! Feel free to talk to Elise Parker or Dawn Haskell for more information. Festivities will start at 5:00 pm.
Donations needed for All Hallow’s Eve – As we prepare to light up the night, we are in need of gallon milk and water jugs (non-light block milk jugs). Start saving them and bring them to church between now and Halloween. Ask your friends to save them to as we need as many as possible. Also we are looking for candy donations. 2. "Nook" Did you hear? We are transforming our gathering room and creating a Nook (working title) in the corner by the altar! This space is being designed to be a comfortable area to sit back, chat, read, drink some coffee, and enjoy art created by those in our own church community. So... We need artists and writers! We will be decorating the Nook space with art created by all of us. We are asking for photography, drawings, paintings, etc. etc. etc. We also want poetry or other writings so share. If you want to contribute or have other artistic ideas, please contact Sarah. And, we need a better name for the space!

1. This Sunday - Join us on Sunday as we continue our Words to Build a Life On series. You're invited to take a moment to listen to From the Inside Out in preparation for our worship gathering. The sermon will have us finally looking at the Lord's Prayer as in Matthew. You can also prepare for worship by going through our Community Scripture Way.

2. Potluck - We will be having our monthly potluck This Sunday. There is no particular theme this month. If you have any suggestions for future themes please email Christina Duncan. Potlucks will usually take place the third Sunday of each month.

3. Interfaith Social Services - Yard Sale Saturday October 15 from 9am-1pm at 105 Adams St in Quincy, MA. It doesn't matter if it rains, this yard sale is indoors! Clothes, collectibles, antiques, household goods, decor, hidden treasures. Will there be bargains, you bet! There will also be raffles and a concession stand. Come to buy, browse or donate. The Thrift Shop and Career Closet will be accepting donations all day. All proceeds benefit the programs of Interfaith Social Services.

4. Involvement with Children- There are many ways you can be involved with the children in our church. Dawn is always looking for people to be added to the rotation for the nursery schedule (during service). Below is the tentative schedule. Email or see Dawn Haskell if you would like be become involved. Also there is a need for helpers for children's Sunday School from 9:30am-10:30am and possibly someone else to take one a separate group of 1st grade students. Talk to Dawn if you are interested.

2. Extreme Makeover Shelter Edition Have you heard? The North Street Community Church will be doing an Extreme Makeover project with the South Shore Friends of the Homeless THIS WEEKEND (Friday, October 7th – Sunday, October 9th). The project will include stripping down and fixing up a shelter space at the Rehoboth Shelter in Norwell. In order to finish the project in three days, we need volunteers to commit to four-hour shifts. ... The shift times and responsibilities are at this link. On Sunday, October 9th at 4 PM, we will all be gathering at Friends of the Homeless to see the finished project and celebrate with the shelter guests. 1. This Sunday - As we forge ahead in the Sermon on the Mount this week as part of our Words to Build a Life on series, we'll look at how Jesus speaks of "oaths & authenticity."

2. 9-11 10th Anniversary Interfaith Service of Remembrance & Peace You are invited to gather with others from our community as we share together in remembering the events of September 11, 2001 through songs, readings, prayers, and silence. This interfaith service is sponsored by the Hingham & Hull Religious Leaders Association. 4:00-4:30 pm at the First Parish Old Ship 107 Main St., Hingham.

In addition, earlier in the day at the time of the strike of the first tower at the World Trade Center (8:46 AM), we will be ringing our steeple bells with the other churches throughout town in remembrance. If you want to come, we'll gather outside the front of the chapel to stand in solidarity as the bells ring. (And you'll be nice and early for Sunday School!)

1. This Sunday - We'll continue in the Words to Build a Life On series, this week while Jeremy is away Tim Eyring will be bringing us the word of God.

Pot luck- As some of you already know the Eyrings are preparing for a major transition in their lives. Tim has accepted a position in a college in North Carolina and will be starting his new job there on the 24th of August. Tim will be preaching for us on Sunday August 21 and we are planning for our monthly pot luck on that same day. Since Tim and Ardie are well known for their wonderful crock pot contributions to our pot lucks we have decided to honor them by having a crock pot themed meal. With the repairs to the electrical in the kitchen there are now plenty of plugs so we would like everyone to bring their favorite crock pot meal to share. Everyone say Crock Pot Pot Luck 3x fast! We will have several extra guests this Sunday morning because of the passing of Arlene Pleyer. So please bring plenty of extra.

2. Arlene Pleyer- Ardith & Tim Eyring send their appreciation for the prayers and condolences sent on the passing of Ardith's mom, M. Arlene (Jaquith) Pleyer, who passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, August 17, 2011 at the age of 89, following a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, J. Everette Pleyer, two daughters, Arla Jeanne Buchanan (Jim) and Ardith Eyring (Tim), six grandchildren Angie (Buchanan) Powers, Andy Buchanan, Jay Buchanan, Judy Buchanan, Warren Eyring, and Allison (Eyring) Holcomb, seven great grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. Arlene will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt, whose greatest desire was to serve God to the best of her ability.

Funeral services for Arlene are as follows: on Saturday, August 20, 2011 the family will receive visitors at 1:00 PM at the Richard Davis Funeral Home; 373 Court St., Plymouth, MA 02360 (next to Cordage Park) to be followed immediately at 2:00 PM by a Funeral service. A Memorial Service and Internment will be held later this fall in Kansas City, MO at a date yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial donations be sent to Nazarene Compassionate Ministries (http://www.ncm.org/give/ncm/) or the Alzheimer's Association (PO Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011) in her memory.

3. Meals As Ardith's family gathers for the funeral Carol Newell is putting together a list of people to help our with meals for the family. If you are able to help please email Carol.

4. Sunday School Donations- The Younger kids Sunday School class is in need of cereal boxes for a few of the lessons during the month of August. Please save your empty cereal boxes and bring them with you to church. Thanks!

5. August Pot luck- As some of you already know the Eyrings are preparing for a major transition in their lives. Tim has accepted a position in a college in North Carolina and will be starting his new job there on the 24th of August. Tim will be preaching for us on Sunday August 21 and we are planning for our monthly pot luck on that same day. Since Tim and Ardie are well known for their wonderful crock pot contributions to our pot lucks we have decided to honor them by having a crock pot themed meal. With the repairs to the electrical in the kitchen there are now plenty of plugs so we would like everyone to bring their favorite crock pot meal to share. Everyone say Crock Pot Pot Luck 3x fast! There will be a sign-up sheet in the foyer and feel free to make cold dishes and put them in the corck pot.

1. This Sunday - What a busy Sunday coming up! Two things are happening in addition to our regular Sunday worship gathering during which we will continue with the Beatitudes in the sermon on the mount. First, right after service we will be having our annual potluck-at-the-park at the Hingham Bathing Beach (click here for a map). There are no grill usage allowed so everything must be heated before leaving the church or just picnic style things brought. Camping chairs, blankets, frisbees, and the like are welcome!

Second at 6:00 PM, Rev. Lora Wooster will be coming to share with us the possibilities of a new ministry endeavor through Global Partnerships. EVERYONE is invited to come and hear the exciting ways that our church can partner with a church in Meso-America (the Caribbean, Mexico, & Central America). We will share ice cream together after.

2. Invitation from Pastor Jeremy - For our Wednesday evening dinner & discussion this summer, we are looking line-by-line at the Lord's Prayer within the Sermon on the Mount. To complement this, many of you are sharing your thoughts from a book on prayer and reporting to us what you discovered, learned, were challenged by, etc. in that book. I have all of the books in my library, so you don't have to purchase anything - just read the book and let us know about it! You can see the books and authors here. There are only a couple left, so email me to let me know if you're willing to help us out. I'm developing a schedule for reporting, but this next week we'll look at "Our Father which are in heaven." I'm looking forward to this as we seek to be in better awareness of the Kingdom of God and his work in us through prayer!

We are also in need of several volunteers for the nights of our Kids' Summer Fun Week as well as the Saturday before (July 23rd) at 9am to help transform our Chapel for the exciting week to follow. How can they be called "blessed"? We'll consider these and others questions tomorrow. 5. Do you enjoy working with kids? Volunteers are needed to work with the young children of our church family. For the summer months of July and August, volunteers are needed to help assist Christina during Sunday School time. Starting in September, we would like to be able to split the growing Sunday School class into two groups, so we will need someone willing to teach as well as people to assist. If you would like to be involved please contact Dawn Haskell.

6. Weekly Cleaning of the Chapel -
Here is the schedule for cleaning (Use Saturday as a reference for which week is which).

7. Sunday, July 17 - Two things are happening in addition to our regular Sunday schedule. (This is just in TWO weeks!):

1. This Sunday - This Sunday, we're getting into Jesus' Sermon on the Mount: Words to Build a Life On. We are focusing on the first beatitude: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of God." You can prepare by following our CSW. 2. Chapel Clean-Up - Have you stopped by our kitchen lately? If not stop by and see some changes that have been made! We've got plenty more to do around the chapel, so on July 25th beginning at 9am we will be having a chapel clean-up day. We'll be cleaning the storage space, working on the outside of the building, and giving the inside of the church a really good cleaning. At lunch time we will all take a break and enjoy some pizza.

3. Godspell - If you missed the performance of Godspell, or loved it so much you want to see it again, you're in luck! Acts From the Heart will be presenting Godspell again this weekend, Sunday, June 26 at 6:30pm at St. Paul's Church of the Nazarene in Duxbury (136 Summer St.). Spread the word!

4. Blurbs from the Board - The Board is working to upgrade our beautiful and historic Chapel. Some things to look for: upgrades to the Chapel kitchen, repairs to the various entrances, continued improvements to the front yard and garden. (Your help in any of these ongoing needs would be appreciated - contact Ed DiSante.) Some things to think and pray with the Board about: Ministry to our Community-specifically to residents at Thaxter Park; Outreach and service opportunities with our Chapel Shelter space and the families that reside there, and our shelter families in Norwell and Weymouth; Ministry opportunities with members and friends who are limited in their ability to leave their homes; Mission Partnerships with sister churches in other World Areas. You can talk to any Board Member about any of these opportunities.

The first beatitude gives us our direction for this week: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.” The Message puts it this way: “You're blessed when you're at the end of your rope. With less of you there is more of God and his rule.” The readings this week are selected to resonate with this idea: that God’s Kingdom is present even in the most difficult and Godforsaken situations of life.

How can you arrange your life in ways that allows for you to rely more upon God and his power rather than your own? How do you see this in the life and example of Christ?

Pray to God each day, asking that this time you’re spending only before him would help you live for and through Christ. If you’ve committed to reading the whole Sermon on the Mount for a given number of days/times each week, be sure to do so.

1. Words to Build a Life On - It's often said of Ghandi that he uttered the words: “I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” These are tough words from a man who had a few things in common with Jesus Christ himself, yet didn't claim the title of "Christian" himself. Was he right? Can those who call themselves Christians be so far from what Christ taught? What did Christ teach?

At the heart of Jesus Christ's teaching in the Gospel of Matthew is what tradition calls the "Sermon on the Mount." Our church community is diving into these teaching (Matthew 5-7) beginning this Sunday. The invitation for all to join in is multi-fold. Click here to see how you can participate. 1. This Sunday (May 22) - What did Jesus mean when he said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me"? Many say that he making a statement about other religions. Others have understood that this means that one must know the name of Jesus Christ to get to heaven. Or perhaps this is a statement about the relationship of Jesus the Son to God the Father. Or is Jesus the judge? We'll look at these various understandings of this well-known statement of Christ on Sunday. Come prepared to worship and hear the Word (you can read our passages here). And if you have an Ashes to Fire journal, keep reading our daily passages!

2. Free Roller Skating - Carol Newell invites everyone to a night of free roller skating! Many local food pantries have more demand now than ever to keep their shelves stocked. Please help support our local communities by skating to keep the shelves stocked! The skating rink is rented and all they need is you! Let's skate, have fun and fill our local food pantries. This event will take place at the Carousel Family Fun Center, 1055 Auburn Street in Whitman, June 9th, 6:00-8:00 PM. Each family is asked to bring canned goods which will be donated to the Braintree food pantry. The night includes two hours of free roller skating with a DJ, skate rentals available for $3.00 and the food court will be open for purchases. Please RSVP to Carol by email by June 1st to reserve your spot!

3. FREE performance of Godspell - On Saturday, June 4 at 6:30 PM, Acts from the Heart, a Christian theatre troupe directed by the Gerber family, will bring their production of Godspell the musical to our church. Admission is FREE. This is a great event for families with children. All are invited to attend. The performance is one hour long, followed by a dessert reception. How can you help? Acts from the Heart is a ministry in the greater Boston area, creatively sharing the Word through the arts. They bring their performances to area prisons, churches, and other venues. We will be taking a love offering at the performance to support their ministry. Donations may also be placed in the offering boxes at any time.

Please clearly mark it for Acts from the Heart. We also need desserts for the reception. Please contact Sarah if you can help in this way.

4. June 5th - On June 5th Rev. Jon & Margaret Scott, missionaries to Malawi, will be joining us for Sunday morning gatherings. Afterwards we will be having a potluck with a theme of "World Foods". Bring a dish from your ethnic background or your favorite ethnic dish.

5. The (Re) Birth of God's People - A reminder: You will want to be in worship on Pentecost Sunday: June 12th as Pastor Jeremy shares what God has been saying for our church community coming out of our discernment journey.

1. This Sunday (May 8) - To begin the third week of Easter this Sunday, we will consider the story of Jesus eating with the two on the road to Emmaus. How is Christ revealed when we break bread together? In preparation of worship, read your daily Ashes to Fire journal and our passages here. See you Sunday!

Response to Storms in the South - The Board of General Superintendents of the Church of the Nazarene have called for prayer and support for our brothers and sisters in the South affected by the devastating storms a few weeks ago. Read their plea here. As in the wake of most any disaster in the world, our Nazarene Disaster Response is already at work. You can support the work financially here. You can also always bring in an offering in response and support to worship with you. Place it in an offering box, but be sure to mark it clearly. Ed DiSante also reminds us that there is need for money to ship Crisis Care Kits as well. Information about that is here. (It costs $12 to ship a box.)

3. May Potluck- May's potluck will be a picnic-themed potluck. We are hoping for a beautiful day so we can gather on the front lawn (so bring your favorite blanket or chair). If not, we will 'picnic' inside. There is a sign-up sheet in the church foyer.

1. This Sunday (May 1) - With Resurrection Sunday behind us, we will continue in this season of Easter by looking at the rest of John 20. Remember: Ashes to Fire continues through Pentecost (June 12th this year), so keep reading your book! This Sunday we will look at Jesus' appearance to his followers in the locked room. This passage holds the infamous conversation with Thomas as well (come to Sunday School for good discussion about the relationship between faith & doubt). 1. This Sunday (April 24th) - This is the greatest day of our Church Year - Resurrection Sunday! We have a lot planned for Sunday, but don't first forget our Good Friday Service of Shadows (7:00 PM) tomorrow. You won't want to miss this reflective evening of visual and musical arts. Then on Sunday we'll gather early at 6:00 AM for a Sunrise Service with breakfast and an egg hunt after for the kids. Children's Sunday School will be at 9:30 and we'll Celebrate the Resurrection at our normal time (10:30 AM). Sarah will be introducing a new song called "He Reigns" which you can preview here.

As we come to the end of Lent and the beginning of Easter, we'll continue in our Ashes to Fire emphasis by looking at "Christ in (out of!) the Tomb." If there's ever a Sunday to gather with your brothers & sisters in Christ...this is it! See you Sunday!

2. Save the Date (Mission to Mars) - We will be holding an informational meeting on May 1st to introduce our summer VBS. Mission to Mars will take place during the week of July 25-29 from 6-8 PM. 1. This Sunday (April 17th) - This Sunday is Palm Sunday: "Jesus in the Limelight", as we continue in our Ashes to Fire journey. In addition, we will have our Annual Meeting and receive annual reports. During worship, Sarah will be introducing a song that will be new to many called Hosanna. After we worship, we'll gather for our monthly potluck. This month, we'll celebrate the accomplishments of our 2011 graduates. There's no theme for this one - just a plain 'ole potluck - bring your favorite dish. Finally, in the evening, plan on coming to the Easter musical at the Duxbury St. Paul's Church of the Nazarene (136 Summer St.), in which many from our church community are participating.

And don't forget our other Holy Week gatherings:
Monday: Way of the Cross Prayer Walk (at Bethel CotN, 41 Empire St.) drop in any time from 5:00-10:00 PM.
Wednesday: Community Dinner & Discussion (6:00-8:00 PM)

2. Easter Tulips - On Resurrection Sunday (the first Sunday of Easter - April 24) we are hoping to make our sanctuary look beautiful for this wonderful feast day in the Christian church year. As part of this, we are together purchasing white tulips in 6" pots to be placed around the platform. If you can help out with this or would like to purchase one or more in memory of loved ones, please fill out this form. Each tulip pot costs $6.50. Payment can be placed in the offering boxes (but be sure to specifically mark it). Please feel free to take the plants with you after we worship that day. All orders need to placed before Sunday April 17th.

4. Discernment & Prayer - I wanted to take a moment to specifically ask you to pray with me in these next seven days. Starting tomorrow, Friday (April 15) through next Thursday (April 21), I have the opportunity to spend most of each of these days in prayer and discernment for our church community. As I read again through our surveys from the Discernment Journey, search the scriptures, and walk in conversation and listening with the Lord, I will be seeking God's direction for our church. With Meghan and the kids away in Maryland, I am thankful for this time to be able to do this. But I'm asking that you pray for and with me. I'd love to know about your solidarity with me. Let me know! (But understand that I likely will not be responding to texts, calls, etc. during this time.) I will look forward to being with you at our scheduled events of Holy Week. SPECIAL EDITION: The Ardrey Update

As you will remember, Ryan Ardrey left us back in December to study at Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City. He wanted to update the North Street Community as to how things are going for him:

Greetings from 1,478 miles away! I hope all of you are doing well. I wanted to send a little update about life in KC, and also thank everyone I didn't get to thank personally for the gift you sent away with me in December. Not having to make all of my ends meet financially has helped with the transition greatly.

Well, as month four greets me, I'm remembering that April comes in and goes out like a lion when you're a student. My classes have been going well so far even as I'm going through academic deja' vu all over the place. Almost immediately after I got out here, I got connected, through an NTS posting, with Dr. Neil Wiseman. Neil is a retired Nazarene pastor/mover-and-shaker in the church who has fairly advanced Parkinson's Disease. So I was hired as a caregiver for 15 hrs. a week. It's been a great job but I'm still in need of another job on the side to pay all the bills (and feed myself).

I'm living in an apartment with another seminarian and we're on a street with 15 other seminarians living on the same block (I get to be the lone East Coast guy). Once a week we all invade one of the apartments and eat dinner together. There's definitely some cool people out here, but I'm not ring shopping or anything, for those who care about that stuff (or pretend not to). I've also made my first forays out in the basketball courts of KC so I can get my Great White Hope nickname back :)

After visiting all kinds of churches and meeting tons of people in Sunday School classes (and getting some free meals along the way), I've recently decided to attend KC First Church of the Nazarene. The pastors there have been really receptive and there are a variety of ways I could serve. It's way different than North St. but I'm aiming to bring some of the strengths of North St. to First church, even if it's like 10 times bigger (crazy I know).

I've been planning to make a trip back but I don't have any dates yet because my family is all over the place now. I'm not less sure about a May visit but I'll be in MA for my brothers wedding July 23. I hope you know I'm praying for you all. Keep challenging and encouraging each other through the discernment process, and expect that God is going to compel you as a body to spread his kingdom in and through you.

1. This Sunday (April 10th) - As we continue from Ashes to Fire, we'll look at the powerful chapter of John 11, Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. Read all of our passages for Sunday here. We'll also gather together for the last time with the Bethel Church of the Nazarene for the Remembrance. It will again be at their place (41 Empire Street, Quincy) at our regular time: 6:14 PM.

2. Our Shelter Space - We are still collecting food to go towards a "food pounding" for our previous shelter guests as they have moved into an appointment in Dorchester! This also means that we have great need to spruce up the shelter area for our next guests. Lauren Scott and Herb Newell are overseeing the volunteers and detailed needs for this work. Please contact Lauren or Herb if you are able to help in the next week.

1. This Sunday (April 3rd) - As we continue in our Ashes to Fire journey this week, we come to John 9 and Jesus' healing of a blind man. Jesus was often focusing on people that society generally did not. When we see "Jesus in the Fringes," it's a call to us his people to find ourselves with them as well. As you prepare for worship, read our passages and consider: Who are the people in the fringes, the periphery, or the outer edges of our society today?

There will be two newer songs introduced this Sunday. Sarah has shared the following links so that you may preview them ahead of time: House of God, Jon Foreman & You Never Let Go, Matt Redman. This week's Remembrance will take place outside at 5pm in front of Gardner Hall on the campus of Eastern Nazarene College.

The Beginning of Lent: Ash Wednesday

We're there: at the beginning of the Lenten journey. Again.

Tonight we kick it off with our Service of Ashes. Come tonight and let's walk together through this stark reminder of our humanity and thus, our great need for Christ and the cross. We will receive our Ashes to Fire journals at the end and commit to the journey through the seasons of Lent & Easter together. If you have not yet signed up for one, we do have a couple of journals left. (There will be no community dinner.) We'll begin the service at 7:00 PM. Hope to see you then!

1. This Sunday (March 6th) - This is Transfiguration Sunday. You'll notice a common theme in all of our scripture passages: ascending to experience the glory of the Lord. What have been the moments in your life where you've been uniquely aware of the presence of God? What was going on in your life at that time? Where were you? What was it that made you feel like God was present? We'll look together at Jesus' time on the Mount of Transfiguration as we consider the presence of the glory of the Lord in our lives.

2. Ashes to Fire - Lent is soon upon us! Ash Wednesday is next week - March 9th. Plan on being a part of our Service of Ashes that evening (7:00 PM) as we kick off the season and our daily emphases through scripture reading, inspirational reading, and prayer (there will be no community dinner/discussion that evening). These emphases will surface in every aspect of our weekly church rhythms: Sunday mornings, Sunday School, and Bible Studies. 6. Social Security - What You Need to Know
On Tuesday March 29, 1001 from 7:00-8:30 pm we will be hosting Kristen Alberino (from Metropolitan Public Affairs specialist-social security administration). She will be presenting "Social Security - What you need to know". Social Security is widely recognized as the most successful domestic program in the history of our country. Its importance comes from the fact that it was designed as a financial floor of protection for all of us. During our presentation we will discuss, the role of Social Security in our society, as well as the benefits and services provided by Social Security; how to qualify for benefits; what Social Security offers for online services. 1. This Sunday (Feb. 27th) - This Sunday, we pick back up in 1 Corinthians 4:1-5. In it, Paul encourages us to withhold judgment. Coupled with Jesus' words concerning worry in the Sermon on the Mount, we'll (re)consider together the arenas in which we put our worry. Read all of our passages here. 1. This Sunday - If you've seen the movie, Shawshank Redemption, perhaps you remember that great scene where Andy Dufresne tells his friend Red that in life, there come moments when it's time to "get busy living, or get busy dying." As he sets out for a momental decision in his own life, it seems that his point is that there come times when we need to choose to move on to more important and meaningful things. We can sit and wallow, or we can choose to move onward. In our main passage for this week, Paul writes of infancy in Christ, telling the Corinthians that they need to wean themselves off "milk" to be able to live as spiritual people who need "meat." As you prepare for worship this week, ask yourself: "What can I do to move from infancy in Christ to a more meaningful and lasting spiritual person?" As always, it will be good to read our passages for the week here.

Sarah will be introducing a new song called Walk By Faith, by Jeremy Camp. Have a listen to become familiar with it.

We will also gather around the table of communion on Sunday night for our monthly Remembrance (come at 6:00 PM). We will continue our theme from the morning of deciding to go deeper in depth with Christ. We'll also look briefly at our hopes for the seasons of Lent & Easter this year through Ashes to Fire.

Lastly, please note that there is no Sunday School or worship gathering in Hingham next Sunday, 2/20. (See #3 below for more info.)

3. North Street Community Retreat at Windsor Hills Campground - It's next weekend! We leave one week from today. If you have yet to sign up to go and are planning it, we need to know. There will be no worship gathering in Hingham on the Sunday of the Retreat as our church community will be worshiping on the campground that morning. All are welcome (even if you are not coming up for the whole retreat). We'll worship at 10:30 as usual, and follow signs to "The Inn." Rev. Dan Whitney will speak to us that morning. The above is a prayer from a song we will hear in worship this Sunday - Words to Build a Life On. It is mainly referring to the Beatitudes from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, part of our gospel passage this week. The beatitudes seem backwards from many of the values held in our society. Some of them may even seem foolish. In our epistle passage this week, Paul acknowledges that the message of the cross (and thus the way of the cross) is foolishness to the world. We'll be hearing about these things on Sunday. In preparation, would you read our passages?

2. HHRLA Trip to Israel - The Hingham & Hull Religious Leaders Association is sponsoring a trip to Israel next year. There is an informational meeting on Sunday at 7:00 PM. For more information, see this article in the Hingham Journal.

3. Sound System - We are in need of a few people willing to learn and run the sound system during our gatherings. Some previous musical experience is helpful, but not essential. Please speak to Sarah if you're willing to help.

4. North Street Community Discernment of God's Mission - It's time to sign up for a discussion group! For all the info on the discernment journey, click here. 1. This Sunday - We're looking forward to being together again on Sunday! Sarah passes along this video ("Let it Rise"). We used to sing this a few years ago, but it'll surface again on Sunday. Our main scripture focus comes from this week's epistle passage - I Corinthians 1:10-18 (read all of our passages here). We'll be considering the potential for unity as Christ's Body in the local church, that we can do so much more together than we can individually.

2. Coffeehouse - The next Coffeehouse at Duxbury St. Paul's Church of the Nazarene is tomorrow, Saturday, January 22 at 7pm. All are welcome to join in the night of music, art, and coffee. Please talk to Sarah if you are interested in performing. St. Paul's Church is located at 136 Summer St. in Duxbury.

1. This Sunday - First off, a couple dozen of us really enjoyed our Remembrance gathering this past Sunday evening which was a Wesley Covenant Service. Some have asked for the words, which you can read here. We hope to have this special service again next New Year's Day.

This coming Sunday (2/16), we will begin our short series on 1 Corinthians. Prepare for worship by reading our passages here. Be sure to plan on staying for our winter "Soup & Bread" potluck. - Pastor Jeremy

Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Event - Each year the Hingham & Hull Religious Leaders Association hosts an event to remember the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. around the federal holiday in his honor. This year it will be on Sunday evening, January 16th at 6:00 PM at the Hingham Congregational Church (366 Main Street) and will feature a service of remembrance and challenge.

4. North Street Community Retreat- Our third annual North Street Community Retreat (February 18-21, President's Day weekend) is getting closer and closer. Everyone is invited to come! The 'programming' will be minimal to maximize our time of fellowship with each other...just getting to know one another better. We will have a special time of worship together on Sunday morning (no worship gathering in Hingham that day). Windsor Hills Campground is just outside of Hillsboro, NH. We'll be staying in "the Inn". Cost includes 8 meals and 3 nights in hotel-quality rooms with individual bathrooms. A deposit of $30/per person would be helpful as soon as possible. Rosalie Carlson has shared that her son is being deployed sometime in March or April. In addition, Rosalie has not been feeling very well again of late. Let's keep them in prayer.
Jennifer Colson is seeking various forms of financial aid in her quest to take part in the Christmas Creek Village Retreat Center. She has been accepted and received some scholarships, but is in need of a cosigner or monetary gifts to be able to go. Please keep her in prayer as well.

1. This Sunday - This Sunday is the first after Epiphany, which will have us look at Jesus' baptism. You can read our passages here. Reading them before coming would be a great way of preparing for worship! On Sunday evening, we will have a special Remembrance gathering: a Wesley Covenant Service. Many in the various Wesleyan traditions use this service at the beginning of a new year. For one example of this service, click here (will open and/or ask to save a .doc file). 2. Practicing Presence! - Coming out of our emphasis on presence during Advent & Christmas, we all have a weekly opportunity to practice "presence with others" beginning tomorrow (1/8) at the New England Friends Home at Thayer House (86 Turkey Hill Road, Hingham). This is a retirement home where we will spend time playing games, talking, and just being present to those who live there. We're to be there from 1:30-3:00 PM.

3. January Potluck - With the heart of winter coming, the Ministries Committee thought it a great idea to have a Bread & Soup style potluck on for our January potluck (Sunday January, 16th). There is sign-up sheet on the foyer bulletin board.

1. This Sunday - The last two years on this date (fourth Sunday of Advent), snow has impeded our ability to be together the Sunday prior to Christmas. While many forecasters are calling for snow on Sunday, hopefully it will hold off until after our gatherings this year! We will consider the peace (shalom) of Advent in morning worship, and I'm looking forward to celebrating and caroling once again with our friends at Thaxter Park in the evening (see below for more details). Also, please plan now on worshiping together on Christmas Eve @ 4:30 PM. This is one of my favorite gatherings of the year, I hope you will come. - Pastor Jeremy

2. Christmas Caroling - We will gather with the residents of Thaxter Park in their Community Center (30 Thaxter St.) on Sunday (12/19) at 5:30pm to enjoy some food and Christmas caroling. There is limited parking, so if you're willing to make the short walk from the Church parking, that would be great! They are providing a spaghetti and meatball dinner for us, and everyone from our church is asked to bring cookies, brownies and other finger-style desserts. If you are able to bake something we would greatly appreciate it!

3. Ladies Night/Cookie Swap - Hello Ladies!-- Just wanted to remind everyone that next Tuesday, 12/21, is our cookie swap! So far the cookies we have coming are spritz, sugar cut-outs, buckeyes and cran-pistachio cookies! Yummy! If you're planning on coming please let me know and what type of cookie you will be bringing! Hope you all can make it, it should be a GREAT time! I'm planning on bringing some fun hot chocolate with the trimmings to go with our cookies! Charlie has offered to bring a Christmas craft. Or you can bring any last minute crafts/gifts you need to get finished before the big day! Let me know if you have any questions!-- Becky Rankin

4. Christmas Shoppe - The Christmas Shoppe of Friends of the Homeless of the Shore continues to be very busy and open for "business" in our own Newell Gathering Room. There is still need for volunteers to sort and wrap from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and Saturdays through Dec. 24. Hours can be arranged for volunteers who can only help in the evenings. Donors are still needed to adopt families needing Christmas gifts as well. What a great way to "give" in this season!

1. This Sunday - We'll light our third Advent candle this Sunday - "Joy" and look at what joy is in relationship to life. The gospel text will serve as our main focus where John the Baptist (from prison) essentially asks Jesus, "Are you really the one? Then why am I in prison!?" While many people long for Advent & Christmas, for many others, joy is a difficult thing to come by in this season. But the joy of Christ's coming is for all. Perhaps it's because of our situations of life that we can find joy. We'll look at this together.

2. The Remembrance
The remembrance for this month is this Saturday night at 7pm hope to see everyone there on this special night and time (note that it's Saturday!).

3. ENC Alumni Choir performance
On Sunday evening at 6pm, many people from our community and other friends will be participating in the ENC Alumni Choir at the Quincy Salvation Army Church (6 Baxter Street).

3. Christmas Shoppe
The Christmas Shoppe of Friends of the Homeless of the Shore is open for "business" in our own Newell Gathering Room. Each day there is need for volunteers to sort and wrap from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and Saturdays through Dec. 24. Hours can be arranged for volunteers who can only help in the evenings. Donors are still needed to adopt families needing Christmas gifts.

4. Christmas Caroling
Christmas Caroling with sweets, sandwiches and hot chocolate with residents of Thaxter Park will be held at their Community Center, 30 Thaxter Street, Hingham, on Sunday, Dec. 19 at 5:30 p.m.

As she does every year, Dorothy Newell invites any and all to join her in bell-ringing for the Salvation Army from 10:00-11:00 a.m. this Saturday (Dec. 4) at the lower level of the Sears store at South Shore Plaza, Braintree.

1. This Sunday (Nov. 21st) - Christ the King
There are a number of exciting aspects to this Sunday! It is indeed Christ the King Sunday (Reign of Christ). This wraps up the church year for us with a bange will be receiving new members during worship gathering. The prayer chorus for this week will be "King of Glory."

After we worship, we will have a potluck. We are looking for people to bring various Thanksgiving-themed items. If you have already signed up, thank you! If you have not and would like to, please email Christina Duncan. We pretty much all set with desserts, gravy, and stuffing. We are still in need of vegetables, rolls, and maybe a small ham or anything else you can think of. This will also serve as a send-off party for Ryan Ardrey, who is headed to Kansas City for seminary on December 10th. Recognizing the variety of expenses related to his leaving, we're inviting those who would to participate in love offering for him (be sure to mark your offering or a portion of it for Ryan).

Then after we eat at 2:30pm we will decorate our chapel for Advent & Christmas. Can you believe it!? We need all the help we can get to be ready for the first Sunday of Advent next week.

2. North Street Community Discernment of God's Mission

This Saturday (11/20) brings a coffeehouse at St. Pauls Church of the Nazarene in Duxbury at 7pm. All are invited to come and enjoy the musical selections and/or perform. Food/coffee will be provided , but please consider bringing a snack to share. Ask Sarah for more details.

4. Thanksgiving Community Choir/Thanksgiving Service
If you are interested in being part of the choir at the community Thanksgiving service in Hingham (Old Ship Parish), please email Sarah. The service will be Wednesday evening, November 24th. Rehearsal is at 6pm followed by the service at 7pm.

5. Organ
You may notice the sanctuary looking a bit different in the coming weeks, and not just because we're decorating for Advent & Christmas! We are giving our unused organ to the Epworth Chapel on the Square. This is a new worship gathering meeting at the Second Church in Dorchester under the leadership of our former pastor, Cliff Hersey.

We will wrap up our short series on worship this week by looking at John 4:1-30. What does God ask of us, his worshipers? Our prayer chorus for this Sunday is "Only You"- David Crowder Band

Also, the Remembrance will take place at 6:00 PM. We'll head to the Table together in the theme of the Beatitudes in Matthew 5. Two new songs will be introduced: "Words to Build a Life On" by Mike Crawford and "God of This City" by Chris Tomlin. Hope to worship with you there!

We are looking for people to bring various Thanksgiving themed items: turkey, ham, stuffing, gravy, vegetables, rolls/bread, salads, desserts and anything else you can think of. 1. This Sunday (October 31st)

First, in the morning we will begin a three-week series on worship. Our main text this week will be Genesis 4:1-16, the story of Cain & Abel. In addition, we will be recognizing All Saints' Day a day earlier (ASD is on November 1st every year). If you would like a candle lit in honor of a passed loved one, please let Pastor Jeremy know.

There will be a brief meeting following service for all who are interested in helping out with Sunday Morning Worship. This can include music, PowerPoint, Scripture reading, etc. All are welcome, even if you are not sure what you would like to do yet! Thanks! - Sarah Troxler

Second, because if is All Hallows Eve we will be holding our second annual community apple cider handout. We'll hand out apple cider and other fun things as families walk through the North Street neighborhood for Halloween trick-or-treating. Everyone is invited to join in on the fun. If you are able, unopened bags of candy are appreciated. We will also have snacks and games in the fellowship hall. If Pastor Jeremy can figure it out, we'll have the Patriots game on as well. :-)

We've had two great hours of prayer the past two Monday evenings, praying first for "ourselves," and then our church community and any who's connected in some way. This coming Monday we'll look specifically at Hingham and surrounding communities (7:00 PM).

1. This Saturday and Sunday the Eastern Nazarene Animal Care Team will be joining us. There will be a presentation on October 23rd at 6pm with several live animals. On Sunday Professor Jonathan Twining will talk to us about God's creation and our role in caring for it. Invite your friends, neighbors and spread the word. Click here for more information.

2. On Sunday October 31 there will be a brief meeting immediately following the AM service for all who are interested in helping out with Sunday morning worship.
